The pictured Mary Washington seedlings were dug in mid October 2006
(dormant). We plant Asparagus
Seedlings all year round! (You can plant Asparagus whenever the ground can be worked.
With a good feeding at planting time, and ground preparation, a small harvest can be had the following
spring. (Water every two weeks during the first Winter if snow and rain
seems sparse.) To plant: Dig a trench 12 to 14 inches deep
and atleast that wide. Add 3 or 4 inches of composted manure to the ditch. Now
dig the manure in. Space your Asparagus Seedlings from 12" to 24" apart. Here
at Sierra Vista Farms we do intensive farming. Our seedlings are spaced 12" apart.
The close spacing seems to keep the spears at a medium size.
Firm the soil around the seedlings which have been planted atleast with their
crowns 2" below soil level. Now mulch the trench with straw or sawdust (we use
sawdust) right up to ground level. When you harvest Asparagus (just as the tips
are poking through
the sawdust or straw) reach down through the mulch and cut blanched asparagus. Or,
cut at ground level for green spears. |
